Overview

Sydney Unplugged is a photography book about Sydney - its buildings, its street, its parks, and certainly, its people, the Sydneysiders. All 232 of the photographs were taken by photographer Vasil Boglev over a period of six years, between 2003 and 2008.They show the simple, readily visible, everyday life of the city, and offer insights into aspects of city life not so readily visible. Using a strict composition and skillfully playing with light and shadows, angles and contrasts, Boglev offers his own unique perspective of the things around him. All of the photographs are shown, practically, in full frame, without any cropping. Boglev carefully chooses the composition, he makes mental rearrangements of the props which will become part of the frame, decides which of these elements have primary importance, valuates the light, and... fires . The result is the series of authentic and captivating images. Sydney Unplugged is not a book of postcards, but rather a multi-faceted visual exploration of the city. Vasil Boglev moved to Sydney in the late 80s. He was born in Poland in 1953 to Macedonian parents. He is a trained architect and has worked in several architectural firms in New South Wales and Western Australia. He also worked as a journalist, and a publisher. However, he was always a photographer, ever since he bought his first 6x6 bakelite camera in a small stationery kiosk in Poland at the age of 7. He took up photography seriously while in high school and started exhibiting and publishing his work at this time. Sydney Unplugged is his second book, the first being Thinking of You.
