OverviewUterine cancer, also known as endometrial cancer, is a form of cancer that begins in the endometrium, the uterine lining. The uterus is a pear-shaped organ in the pelvis of a woman's reproductive system where the embryo develops during pregnancy. Typically, uterine cancer originates when endometrial cells undergo genetic mutations that cause them to proliferate uncontrollably. Within the uterus, these abnormal cells can create a mass or tumor. Over time, if left untreated, uterine cancer can spread to nearby tissues and, in advanced phases, to distant organs through a process called metastasis. Uterine cancer is the most prevalent type of gynecologic cancer in women, and it predominantly affects postmenopausal women, though it can affect women of any age.
