Overview

This title has been specifically designed to be a practical reference for medical students and house officers to help manage the critically ill surgical patient. The first section is titled Resuscitation and exposes the reader to a condensed version of generic topics in primary intensive care medicine. The sections that follow have been categorized according to medical and surgical subspecialties and cover the most germane of problems encountered in a tertiary surgical intensive care unit. Sections of certain chapters, while repetitive, have been left intact in an attempt to maintain the authors' messages and provide the reader with some contradictory but referenced views. The technical chapters describe a very introductory approach to various exercises such as airway management and vascular cannulation.

a oeDr. O'Donnell understands from the perception of an internist what supplemental information is necessary in order to enable the intensivist to provide excellent care to the critically ill surgical patient. By presenting the bottom line information and referencing both the journal articles and other critical care textbooks, this book should be a valuable resource for all entry level providers and particularly for physicians at all levels who decide to venture into collaborative management of the surgical critical care patient. I believe that this book will help the new practitioner find solid initial footing in this new environment and also provide a bridge to other works necessary to develop a deeper understanding of this complex field. It is a pleasure to see limited and clearly defined objectives attained as I review this book. a (Joseph M. Civetta, M.D, Professor and Chairman, Dept. of Surgery, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Director of Surgery, Hartford Hospital, CT, USA) a oeI applaud the authors for accomplishing the task of delivering a complex, multifaceted message in a simple and straightforward manner. It is an outstanding addition to the armamentarium of the surgical critical care educator.a (CHEST 2002, 121: 1728)
