Excerpt from Supplement to Commerce Reports: Italy; November 29, 1918 A very large part of the world's supply of essential oils is found in the market of Messina. The United States is Messina's best cus tomer and takes about one - half of the entire output. For 1917, Mes sina's total export was kilos (1 kilo::2.2046 pounds), gross weight, as against kilos in 1916. The United States took kilos of the 1917 export and kilos during 1916. Italy itself took some additional kilos during 1916. Essential oils are packed in crates containing the asks or coppers which hold the oil; the net weight of oil exports is obtained by de ducting about 40 per cent from the gross weight. Exports to the United States for 1917 were kilos of lemon oil, kilos of bergamot, kilos of sweet orange, and 358 kilos of other essential oils.
