Though her poetry was published and moderately successful, she laid her pen aside to do what was expected of her - marry a good man and have his babies. After her children were older, she became a columnist for several local newspapers, sharing glimpses of her life with her readers. Her humor about everyday life made her a lot of fans. But it was not until a local theater group performed a play based on a short story she wrote that she realized she had a gift for storytelling.
