It is not put there for statistical purposes, but it does, incidentally, illustrate what happened at a very critical period in the history of sugar, namely, that the abolition of the bounties, in 1903, had no effect on the price of sugar, which remained rather below the cost of production, except when, in 1904, a bad beetroot crop, which deprived consumers of tons of sugar, sent prices up for a few months, until a good crop, in 1905, sent them down again below cost of production.
