Overview

With the increased dependency on fossil fuels for energy, the liberation of carbon dioxide into the Earth's atmosphere also drastically increased, contributing significantly to global warming. The sequestration of CO2 from flue gas, one of the major sources of CO2, is considered as a viable choice to limit the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere. The efficiency and economics of CO2 capture can be greatly improved if it can be captured at high flue gas temperatures, considering the energy penalty in cooling the flue gas. For such applications, materials with high regenerable CO2 capacity, high thermal stability and fast sorption kinetic properties are requirement. Solid sorbents due to their high CO2 adsorption capacity, better CO2 selectivity and ease of handling finds application as high temperature CO2 sorbents. Among the high temperature solid sorbents, lithium containing ceramics have attracted great attention due to their relatively high sorption capacity, fast sorption rate and good thermal stability, since its introduction by Nakagawa et al in 1998. Considering the increasing criticality in the global requirement for CO2sequestration, this research work is dedicated to find a suitable candidate for the removal of CO2.This work entitled 'Studies on lithium ceramics based regenerable carbon dioxide sorbents' is a comprehensive report of the experiments conducted on the synthesis, characterisation and evaluation of CO2 sorption of different lithium based ceramic materials. The study has been focused on the synthesis of various lithium ceramic materials for regenerableCO2sorption at high temperatures.
