Overview

Set during the heyday for drugs, sex, and rock 'n' roll, the country awash in war protests and women's rights demonstrations, Nancy Nelson and her young husband, Jack, take a job as fire lookout attendants manning Corral Hill, a 6,000' mountain located in the vast Clearwater National Forest of Idaho. Like other women, Nancy wants freedom, not only for a fair wage, but from her former life, growing up with a sexually abusive stepfather. As Nancy keeps fire watch at 6000', she wrestles with inner demons, as well as health issues that could make it impossible to have a baby, something she desperately wanted. Every emotion she feels is exacerbated by solitude, frightening lightning storms, wildfires, natural phenomenon, and her demanding young husband. STRUCK: A Season on a Fire Lookout, is a story of isolation, extreme weather, and emotional challenges, changing how Nancy sees herself as she courageously moves forward, gaining confidence in life.

Reviews

A heightened sense of vigilance courses through Struck: not only the professional vigilance required of a fire lookout on duty, alert to the faintest wisp of smoke, but also the attentiveness a young woman needs to navigate her body, mind, and spirit. At times an adventure story, at times a romance, and at times an exploration of family trauma, Struck resonates with a reader on many levels at once. -Brenda Miller, author of A Braided Heart: Essays on Writing and Form Struck offers a brave exploration of what it means to break free from family trauma and societal expectations in order to find one's voice and learn to use it. With gorgeous descriptions of scenery most of us don't get to see from Canyon's vantage point above the trees, readers won't want to leave her lookout tower. This book is a must read for anyone who needs either an armchair expedition or balm for healing old emotional scars. -Cami Ostman, author of Second Wind Struck is the journey of a young girl teetering on the edge of womanhood, grappling with the scars of a troubled past. This coming-of-age memoir is a raw, heartfelt exploration of pain, survival, and the indomitable spirit of a woman reclaiming her life. -Lorinda Boyer, author of Straight Enough
