Overview

""". . . a terrific introduction to one of the Civil War's great heroes."" -Leon Reed, author of Stories the Monuments Tell: A Photo Tour of Gettysburg, Told by its Monuments Many people have heard about Joshua Chamberlain's famous bayonet charge at Gettysburg; few know about the unsung hero who put him there. The Civil War broke out in 1861, just as Strong Vincent was beginning his career as a Harvard-educated lawyer and preparing to marry his sweetheart, Elizabeth. Vowing to defend his nation, Vincent volunteered. With no previous military experience, he worked his way from lieutenant to colonel in the Union Army, leading his men through many of the war's most brutal battles. When a vital part of the defensive line was left unguarded at the Battle of Gettysburg, Colonel Vincent strategically recognized Little Round Top as the most valuable ground on the battlefield. He led his brigade, which included Chamberlain's regiment along with three others, there to defend it despite not having orders to do so-a decision that could have resulted in a court-martial. Outnumbered by more than two to one, Vincent and his brigade put up a historic defense that would change the tide of the battle, and the war itself-including the charge that became the stuff of legend. Strong Vincent: A Call to Glory tells the story of Gettysburg's unheralded hero, a common man trying to navigate life and romance in the midst of war who achieved the extraordinary."

Reviews

"""Strong Vincent's actions on Little Round Top on July 2, 1863, have become the stuff of legend: his decision on his own authority to dispatch his brigade, his 'You can't retreat' injunction to Col. Joshua Chamberlain as he sent him to occupy the left flank, and his subsequent mortal wounding while directing his troops. Much less well-known are the events that built his character and the military experiences that led to Little Round Top. Author John Hinman truly brings Vincent to life. Like all good historical fiction writers, Hinman sticks close to the documented narrative but uses a fiction writer's craft to flesh out the story. Hinman, a retired English teacher, knows his Civil War history but he is also an excellent storyteller. This book is a terrific introduction to one of the Civil War's great heroes."" -Leon Reed, author of Stories the Monuments Tell: A Photo Tour of Gettysburg, Told by its Monuments, and History in Granite and Bronze: The Civil War Artwork of Gettysburg, Antietam, and Washington, DC ""Hinman does an excellent job mixing local history in with Strong Vincent's story and doesn't rush through his life. The reader also gets a good sense of how Strong Vincent, already a leader and mature for his age, developed as a tactician. Thoroughly enjoyable."" -Jeff Bloodworth, professor of American Political History, Gannon University ""A fun read, well-paced read! The use of dialogue educates the reader. Bravo to John Hinman!"" -Dr. Joe Beilein, associate professor of history, Penn State Behrend College"

Author Information

John Hinman graduated from Edinboro University with a degree in education and taught middle school students for almost thirty years. He wrote his first novel, True Heroes of Gettysburg, to instill an interest in the Civil War in his students. As a native of Erie, Pennsylvania, John noticed that Strong Vincent, one of the main contributors to the Union victory at Gettysburg, had not been adequately portrayed in novels or historical accounts of the battle. This inspired him to write Strong Vincent: A Call to Glory in celebration of this important figure. John enjoys reading, volunteer work, and spending time with his wife.
