Overview

A staff photographer for the Ketchikan Daily News, Hall Anderson counted among his early influences photographers like Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson, who understood the visual bounty to be found in photographing the candid side of life. For more than twenty-five years, Anderson has brought this perspective to his photographic endeavors, both personal and professional, in the small town of Ketchikan in southeast Alaska. Still Rainin' Still Dreamin' showcasesone hundred of Anderson's prize-winning black-and-white images, which collectively chronicle three decades of life in Ketchikan, spanning its transition from a timber- and fishing-based economy to one built on a booming tourism industry. From timber carnivals to election coverage to Fourth of July parades, Still Rainin' Still Dreamin' is a poignant celebration of the uncanny juxtapositions found in everyday life.

In this lovely book, Anderson presents one hundred of the photographs he has taken for the Ketchikan Daily News since 1984. . . . His images show us two small boys fishing at the city park, a candlelit rally in the days after 9/11, an abandoned bear cub looking over the shoulder of one of its rescuers, and members of a Japanese-American family proudly sitting at the counter of their downtown cafe. Clearly showing that it's not only the A-list photographers who can create interesting and moving work, Anderson's volume will appeal to any reader interested in good photography. -- Book News (4/1/2011 12:00:00 AM) Most photographers regard small-town newspapers as an unavoidable starting point, a place to endure before getting out as soon as the next job offer comes along. Not Anderson. He breaks the mold. In a quarter century of of shooting black-and-white at the Ketchikan Daily News, he's made himself family to the people whose lives he puts in the paper. -- News Photographer (2/1/2011 12:00:00 AM)
