Overview

I remember sitting on one of the top steps of a flight of stairs leading to our second-story home. My dog, Tippy, was lying next to me, bleeding profusely and crying so pitifully as the life slowly drained from her tortured and mangled body. She had just been hit by a car on the road in front of our house. The driver who had hit Tippy tried to do the right thing. He had stopped his vehicle, picked the poor dog up off the road, and carried him around to the back of the house. He placed the dog down next to me on one of the top steps while he tried to explain to my mother the details of the unfortunate accident. Tippy died a few minutes later. I'm sure that this time in my life had to have been the most traumatic up to that point. For young Ray Willis, growing up wasn't always easy. Take a wild and passionate ride back to World War II, Korean War, and Cold War eras, and witness Willis's unique experiences from child to adulthood. With a domineering father and the struggles to grow up, his adventures, follies, and traumas molded him into the man he became and the memories followed him through his service in the Vietnam War. Travel back to a simpler, friendlier America, before the age of today's sophisticated technology, introversion, and a world too at our fingertips. Feel the excitement, passion, happiness, and horror of a boy growing up in an era where kids spent most of their time out of doors, engaged in play with neighbors and pals who often had to use their imaginations to keep themselves amused, and who often became lifelong friends. Reminisce on a time when people valued face-to-face contact and placed great value on how others felt. Ray Willis's story is told in the style of one of his favorite authors, Sherwood Anderson, who penned the novel Winesburg, Ohio.
