Overview"Bautzen II was the only GDR prison unofficially controlled by the Ministry for State Security. Disguised as a normal penal institution on the outside, the prison took on a special position as of 1956. It was here that the State Security locked away particularly dangerous ""enemies of the state."" Bautzen II served the purpose of detaining members of the opposition, spies, those fleeing the GDR, and their helpers in the West, as well as renegades within the heads of the GDR's state and military apparatus. The history of the Bautzen II Stasi prison ends with the collapse of the SED dictatorship in 1989."
