Overview

The waters of the Atlantic Ocean are inhabited by a wide range of starfishes (asteroidea), which form an important component of food chains, are significant ecologically, and are easily recognized biological indicators. Previous studies have not produced a consistent assessment of the validity, number and ranges of species of the starfishes for all four quadrants of the Atlantic or correlated their trans-oceanic affinities. This book rectifies the situation by providing a comprehensive review of the taxonomy and geographical distribution of Atlantic starfishes and a practical identification guide covering 21 families including 140 genera, with 374 species or subspecies recognized as valid. Whilst providing a reference source on the systematics of this geographical goruping for the specialist, it will enable both specialists and non-specialists to make identifications to the specific and subspecific level by means of tabular keys, detailed descriptions and accurate illustrations. Geographic and bathymetric ranges, notes on habits and habitats where known, and discussions of synonymies, affinities and modifications to the classification are also included. This major taxonomic and practical study seeks to serve as a standard reference work on Atlantic starfishes for years to come and a vital working reference for marine biologists, zoologists, ecologists and oceanographers.
