OverviewIn Ovid's Metamorphoses not only figures are transformed, but also the human environment, including cities. This study takes a comprehensive look at the phenomenon of urbanity in the epic for the first time: With the help of a spatial narratological method, she examines the representation and function of the individual cities in the course of the work, with a special focus on Thebes, Athens, Troy and Rome. It becomes clear that a primarily historical-political interpretation of Ovid's depictions of the city would be wrong; rather, the book shows that the cities are primarily to be seen as literary landscapes.
