Overview

On December 13, 2005, the government of the Republic of Lebanon requested that the United Nations establish a tribunal of an international character to try all those who were alleged responsible for the February 2005 attack in Beirut that killed the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and 22 others. Pursuant to the Security Council Resolution 1664 (2006), the UN and the Lebanese Republic negotiated an agreement on the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Further, to Security Council Resolution 1757 (2007) from May 2007, the provisions of the document annexed to it and the Statute of the Special Tribunal there attached, entered into force in June 2007. The volumes in this series present the reasons that led to the establishment of The Special Court and offer an overview of the cases brought before the court. The series includes background materials, such as basic documents on the Tribunal and documents on the conflict. Volume 2 (The Independent Investigation Commission) includes: Statute of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon * Rules of Procedure and Evidence * Rules of Detention * Directive on the Appointment and Assignment of Defense Counsel * Code of Professional Conduct for Counsel Appearing before the Tribunal * Directive on Victims' Legal Representation * Legal Aid Policy for Victims' Participation * Registry Regulations on Assistance and Allowances for Victims and Witnesses * Policy for the Remuneration of Amicus Curiae * Selected Articles of the Lebanese Code of Civil Procedure * Selected Articles of the Lebanese Criminal Law. (Series: Special Tribunal for Lebanon Collection) [Subject: International Law, Criminal Law, Human Rights Law]
