The terminal shoots and branch tips lack the rigidity common to spruce, fir, and pine, and the crown is formed of slender, horizontal branches With somewhat pendent sprays of branchlets and twigs. The leader, or terminal shoot, often droops in the direction opposite from that of the prevailing Wind. In early life the tree has a conical stem, which later becomes less tapering, especially in closed stands having an unbroken crown canopy.
