Overview

Sophie McGuire in no way would look upon herself as a hero. However throughout her lifetime of ninety-eight years, we catch glimpses of her showing that same determination and brave, fighting spirit which has immortalised the Australian Diggers in every theatre of war in which they were engaged. This spirit was very much alive in the hellish battle at Pozieres on the Western Front, France, in 1916. It was here where her husband Ray McGuire. serving with the 4th Pioneer Battalion was wounded as the Australian Infantry Forces, (A.I.F ) gained victory in that sector in just under seven weeks of bitter fighting. During that brief, frantic space of time, in perhaps one of the most brutal conflicts ever conceived, sadly twenty-five thousand heroic Australian soldiers were killed or wounded. Ray McGuire and many of his wounded cobbers returned home from World War 1 either physically impaired or mentally scarred For Ray, suffering Shell Shock, with horrible dreams conjuring up vivid memories of death and wounding by bombardment in the trenches, war still raged fitfully in his mind. The cost to Sophie and her children was inestimable! Sophie possessed a quiet and gentle spirit and held a steadfast faith in God. With an undying confidence in His ability to supply all her needs she courageously faced the nagging fears of Ray's emotional disorders. She willingly chose to live a life lacking in comfort and the necessities of life as she gave herself unstintingly and lovingly to her husband and children
