Overview

In the brief prologue, in a small English village in 1967 a man's body hangs from a hook which has been driven under his chin, the sharp end resting inside the brain. The man's name is Harry Zangwill, and he worked for MI6 before and during the war. There is an enigmatic number burnt into the wooden rod that is part of the murder device. The doctor examining the body suggests that the murder method may be a clue in itself. In the novel's present Anton Alton, British, 29, arrives in a small European town where the year before he had a brief fling with a Russian girl, Tamara. He finds her missing, and everyone who knew her deny her existence. Anton starts a search and comes across a series of enigmatic, seemingly unrelated events and characters: a spectacular break into a bank vault; another girl posing as Tamara; a Russian consul who may be an impostor, but who has a file on Anton; and a mysterious connection to Kim Philby, the Cambridge spy ringleader who famously defected to Moscow in the 1960s. Part Robert Harris, part Friedrich Dürrenmatt, part Patricia Highsmith, this is a suspense thriller about a man looking for his father whom he never knew and coming across the darker, poisonous side of patriarchy as reflected in the tragedies of European past. All the plotlines find a twisty resolution within a poignant back story set in freezing, atmospheric Moscow in the winter of 1987.
