OverviewExcerpt from Soil Survey of Kent County, Delaware, 1920 Very little settlement had been made in what is now Kent County prior to 1664, when the Dutch settlements of Delaware were sur rendered to the English. The early settlers were principally English, Swedish, and Dutch. The 1840 census gives the population of Kent County as The population increased to in 1880, but fell in 1910 to of which was urban and rural. The percentage of rural population decreased from in 1880 to in 1900 and in 1910. In the latter year the rural population averaged persons per square mile.
