Overview

Socialism in the Real World is aimed at readers that have some knowledge and interest in socialism but are unsure how it comes together as a coherent strategy. A number of traditional Marxist and socialist concepts are simplified or reformulated. The 16 short essays do this by focusing on the class struggle as a whole rather than more specific agendas of parties, programs, platforms, and models. The 20th century is the main historical reference point for what capitalism and socialism are, how they work, and how the people's struggles have defined them. History and current conditions are not discussed in detail as extended proofs, but rather in a short form that allows readers to verify the points being made for themselves. The ideas are applied and adapted to the 21st century. The conclusions take the form of lessons to be learned, obstacles to be overcome, resources to be used, and the conditions for victory.

"These authors have high praise for Socialism in the Real World: Sun Tzu: ""This is the book I wanted to write, but the proletariat hadn't been invented yet. I would have called it The Art of Class War."" Karl Marx: ""You petty bourgeois assholes! Why didn't you overthrow capitalism in the early 1920s when you had the chance? Now look what's happened! Read this book. Don't make me come back."" Mark Twain: ""In a moment of drunken optimism while trying to enjoy this dreary afterlife, I didn't think my fellow countrymen could get any dumber. How does one read a telephone? Read a book. Read this book."""

Author Information

Dale Bretches is an economic anthropologist that received a Ph.D. in Anthropology from UCSD in 2000 for his dissertation: Culture and Economy in Cuba's Transition: An Anthropological Perspective. Always interested in innovation, he sets out to update and simplify some of the basic ideas of Marxism and socialism in light of the 20th century, which he survived. He has mastered a few skills and experimented with many others. He has many interests. Just about everyone will be offended by at least one of his interests, but he will have at least one interest in common with just about everyone. He can be reached at dalebretches@gmail.com.
