A veteran of both the Coast Guard and the U.S. Army, in his youth he won the base middleweight boxing championship and served as the supply sergeant for an army field bakery that fed 100,000 men a day. Later in life he founded the 1988 Peace Club in an effort to bring an end to the Cold War, which eventually led to a meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev.
