Overview

"'I've sometimes thought in the dead of night, ""Look at your life, Bruce, rip out the writing, and with all these boiling frustrations and opinions what would you be?"" I'd be in trouble, wouldn't I? Or I'd be in jail. Hard-talking, boisterous, frank and forthright, Bruce Robinson reveals to Alistair Owen the truth about his work and life in a series of exclusive interviews. Talking candidly about his entire career; his acting, writing and directing, and the many tussles he has faced with Hollywood moguls, this is Bruce Robinson as you've never seen or heard him before."

Reviews

'It's alive with Robinson's voice ... he is fully engaged, driven by an endless compulsion to entertain: his conversation is a work of art' Guardian 'Intelligent, honest and pungently expressed, the recollections of Bruce Robinson are a treat' Independent

Bruce Robinson, actor, screenwriter, director and novelist, is best known for Withnail and I, the cult 1985 film which he both wrote and directed, and for his award-winning screenplay for The Killing Fields. In this question and answer session, Robinson gives a candid account of his movie-making experiences. Often blunt in his views on an industry that has not always treated him kindly, Robinson talks about his early acting career, his work during his 'Hollywood hot' period following the success of The Killing Fields and the troubles he has faced trying to work within the Hollywood machine: 'I went up to her [the production manager] and said, Did you cancel the rain? She said, Yeah, there's enough rain in this picture. I went ballistic.' Later in his life he found satisfaction in the completion of his novel The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman, although he was depressed by his agents' lack of enthusiasm. The things we learn about Robinson's life are few: that he never knew his father, that he had a long-term relationship with actress Lesley-Anne Down, that the characters in Withnail and I are largely autobiographical. The book is in no way a biography but more like an extended magazine interview.Still, as a study of a man through his work this is a detailed and absorbing read, our interest sustained ultimately by Robinson's wit and honesty.
