Author Information

John Utley, a Kentucky native, built a massive company from the humble beginnings of a dirt floor in a sharecropper's cabin. He spent his first eleven years in Kentucky and then lived the next four years in various Indiana cities. He moved to Gary, Indiana when he was almost fifteen years old. He attended high school in Gary, living in Gary and Portage, Indiana until he was twenty-six, at which time he was promoted in his job from Chicago to Houston, Texas. He spent time in various positions in Omaha and later to the corporate headquarters in Chicago. He held eight different positions of responsibility with American Service Bureau (an insurance investigation company), employed by that company for nineteen-and-a-half years. He resigned in 1976 and purchased a company that had been in business for a year. The company, EMSI, was doing well but they were in debt. They were small, with four people in the corporate offices and four branch offices. They had used up their line of credit and actually owed the line limit. That company's major line of service was completing paramedical physicals using medical personnel such as registered nurses and LPN's. Starting with only a few employees and offices, the growth was exceptional (100% growth was not unusual). The company eventually grew to 10,000 employees with over 300 offices. When Mr. Utley sold the company in 1999, the company had forged into services including drug testing, investigations for insurance fraud, and medical staffing. Mr. Utley's company was highly respected and considered a leader in innovation and creativeness.
