They lived in a caravan for many years whilst her father mined for Sapphires. Her sister was born in 1979. Gradually their parents built a three bedroom billy boulder house on the top of Bedford Hill which still stands today. Both daughters attended Anakie Primary School followed by Emerald High School. They left the Gemfields as 17 year olds to study at university. Clare studied photography and education, becoming a high school teacher. Her parents still live in Rubyvale. Both Clare and her sister travel to visit every winter with their husbands and children to pass on their love of adventure and continue to experience all that the Gemfields has to offer.
