Overview

The shawl, either woven, printed, knitted, crocheted or embroidered, has been a fashion accessory for more than two hundred years. It originally came from the East and was extensively copied in Europe. This book traces the development of one type of shawl which came from Kashmir and was so much admired in Britain that three centres in particular, Norwich, Edinburgh and Paisley, copied and adapted the designs and techniques. Pamela Clabburn has been interested in embroidery since childhood. After the war she worked freelance as a lingere, dressmaker, embroideress and textile conservationist until she became Assistant Keeper of Social History at Strangers Hall Museum, Norwich. Having run the Textile Conservation Workroom for the Eastern Region of the National Trust for ten years, she is now a textile and embroidery consultant. Other titles for Shire by this author are: Beadwork Samplers
