He has written widely on the relationship between Renaissance literature and the classical past, in his OUP monograph Epic Romance: Homer to Milton, and in a wide range of articles on Spenser, Milton, Shakespeare and other authors. He edited the Complete Sonnets and Poems for the Oxford Shakespeare, as well as Ben Jonson's poems for the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Ben Jonson.
