He served as an Air Force primary jet instructor pilot during the last five years of the Vietnam War.For the next 33 years he worked in the pharmaceutical industry while pursuing his hobbies of writing, American history, and flying. After retiring in 2008, Kent assumed the position of Chairman of Westerners International, an organization with chapters on three continents dedicated to making the study of Western American History fun-""no stuffed shirts allowed."" He stepped down nine years later to return to writing full time.Kent is past leader of Order of Daedalians (a military pilot fraternity), Chisholm Trail Corral (a Westerners chapter), and Rio River Rat Pilot Training Class 71-06. He also chaired three high school class reunions. He is active in the Indian Territory Posse (another Westerners chapter) and the Oklahoma City Men's Dinner Club. For nearly a decade Kent has also judged Wrangler Award entries for the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.In his spare time Kent travels by car with Cheryl to see America at ground level, visit their three grown children, and savor the joys of freedom in this great country."
