Overview

This book is a compilation of papers presented at a day-long conference organized in Chennai, on March 28, 2019, by the Chennai Centre for China Studies (C3S) in partnership with the National Maritime Foundation (NMF) and the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, University of Madras, and supported by the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard on the theme, “Securing India's Maritime Neighbourhood: Challenges and Opportunities”. Contributors included a whole galaxy of luminaries from the serving and veteran echelons of the Indian Armed Forces, the diplomatic community, maritime industry, doyens of Indian academia, and distinguished personalities from the Fourth Estate. A number of facets of seminal importance to national security were addressed in the book. These included conceptual, geopolitical, economic, environmental, and technological issues.

Vice Admiral Pradeep Chauhan, AVSM & Bar, VSM, IN (Retd.) is the Director-General, National Maritime Foundation. He retired in 2013 after an illustrious four-decade-long career in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy. Vice Admiral Chauhan is a prolific writer with over 85 published professional articles and papers, and a respected Adviser and Fellow of several important think-tanks. Commodore R. Seshadri Vasan, (Retd.) is the Regional Director, National Maritime Foundation, Tamil Nadu Chapter and Director, Chennai Centre for China Studies. He has rendered distinguished service in the Navy and the Coast Guard, spanning over 34 years. Commodore Vasan has a number of publications to his credit in a variety of journals, websites, edited books and the print-media. Rishi Athreya is a Public Sector and Political-Risk Consultant. He is a widely published author and editor and has written on various topics related to governance, security and diplomacy.
