En 1973, Sebastião Salgado empezó su carrera de fotógrafo profesional en París y trabajó para las agencias fotográficas Sygma, Gamma y Magnum Photos. En 1994, junto con su esposa, Lélia Wanick Salgado, creó la agencia Amazonas images, que hoy es su estudio y gestiona su obra en exclusiva. Los proyectos fotográficos de Salgado han aparecido en muchas exposiciones y libros, como Sahel.
