Overview

Known primarily for one of the most widely used architectural treatises of the early modern period, Sebastiano Serlio was also an architect of some renown in his own day. This book explores his works and career. Examining his formation in Italy, first in Bologna and then in Rome, Sabina Frommel focuses principally on Serlio's career in France, where through works such as the residence of Ippolito D'Este in Fontainbleau and the Castle of Ancy-le-Franc, he had a profound impact on French architecture. She traces his development from the classicizing manner of his early career to his later works, where he participates in the capricious tastes that were common in both Italy and France during the mid-sixteenth century.
