"Dr. Zelma Lloyd Frank is a retired educator with bachelor's and master's degrees from Lincoln University (Mo.), a master's degree from Herbert H. Lehman College of the City University ofNew York, and a doctorate from the University of Missouri, Columbia. Her career has included the following: teaching in elementary schools in Kansas, Missouri, Massachusetts, and NewYork; reading consultant and diagnostician in elementary and junior high schools in White Plains, New York; teaching methodology courses in education at Hunter College, the City University of New York; instructor and director of the reading clinic at Lincoln University (Missouri); English professor and director of student support services at Southern University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She has conducted workshops and seminars for college personnel on teaching strategies and services for students with disabilities and has been a certified instructional trainer for the Association on Higher Education and Disability. Dr. Zelma Frankworked with the United States Department of Education as an evaluator of federally funded education programs (TRIO) and served as a consultant to the Missouri Department of Education.She has written articles on curriculum and instruction which have been published in journals of higher education and is the author of The History of the President's Houses at Lincoln University. Her doctoral dissertation, ""The Portrayal of Black Americans in Pictures and Content in the Caldecott Award Books and Honor Books from 1938 to 1978,"" has been replicated. The dissertation highlights the sparsity of African Americans in children's books and details theneed for children to see people who look like them in the books they read.Dr. Frank has received the following honors and awards: special recognition for having written and received federal funding for six consecutive Student Support Services proposals; first femalegraduation Marshall at Southern University in New Orleans; marshall for the graduates when receiving her doctorate from the University of Missouri; featured in a Lincoln University librarydisplay that highlighted women who have made historical contributions to the University; inducted into the Lincoln University Alumni Hall of Fame; received the Kansas City, Missouri Lincoln High School Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement; and the Women as Winners YWCA of Greater New Orleans Award for personal and professional achievement and being a role model and mentor for young girls and other women. She was married to Dr. James Frank for sixty years and has two sons and two grandchildren."
