OverviewIn 1947, as the Cold War fires up, the Shield Maidens embark on a mission in Argentina. The Shield Maidens include Erika Lehmann, an infamous spy for Germany during the war; Kathryn Fischer, a former Gestapo officer; and Zhanna Rogova, a notorious Russian assassin. All now work for the newly formed CIA. The Shield Maidens speak English, German, and Russian, but not Spanish. CIA Deputy Director Leroy Carr is in charge of the Shield Maidens. His wife, Kay Carr, is fluent in Spanish and Kay volunteers to accompany the Shield Maidens to South America to act as their translator, despite having no CIA field training. Leroy Carr agrees only because this would be a run-of-the-mill, very low risk assignment. The mission would not stay low risk. When the Shield Maidens go rogue and disappear with Kay, it sends Leroy Carr on a frantic search to locate and save his wife. Table of ContentsReviewsAt the end of the Second World War, mankind is left with the challenging task of creating a new world order out of the still smoldering ruins. Long standing international alliances crumbled and new ones emerged. In the clandestine trenches, old enemies suddenly became allies and war allies enemies. Mike Whicker's new book, Search for Valhalla, is set in the middle of that difficult era, ca. 1947. Whicker spins an intriguing tale about the adventures of a highly-skilled team of female agents code-named the Shield Maidens that is sent out by the newly-created CIA on what is supposed to be little more than a fact finding mission to South America--a mission that swiftly turns deadly. The members of the team are old friends to fans of Whicker's work, but they face new dangers on this mission to a continent that often guards its secrets to the death. This time the Shield Maidens must accomplish their mission while insuring the safety of an amateur sent along as an interpreter who also happens to be their boss's wife. As usual, the team proves itself to be anything but predictable. The story can't miss with long-term fans of the Erika Lehmann spy series, or with new fans with a taste for thrilling and well-written historic fiction. ― David Gray, Esq., Historian At the end of the Second World War, mankind is left with the challenging task of creating a new world order out of the still smoldering ruins.
