Overview

This book documents the character, compassion, leadership and heroism of LT Michael P. Murphy, the young American Navy SEAL who lead a small reconnaissance team of elite warriors to track down Ahmad Shah in the Hindu Kush Mountains in Afghanistan. Betrayed by Afghan Taliban sympathisers, in the resulting battle, LT Michael Murphy, with wilful disregard for his own life, stepped into the line of fire to radio for help. In response to LT Murphy’s call for help, a helicopter carrying eight Navy SEALs and eight Army“Nightstalkers” was subsequently destroyed by a Taliban RPG. LT Michael Murphy, PO3’s Danny Dietz and Matthew Axelson were also killed. The fourth member of LT Murphy’s team, Marcus Luttrell was successfully rescued by U.S. Marines after an epic cat and mouse game of survival. For their actions, Dietz, Axelson and Luttrell were awarded the Navy Cross, second only to the Medal of Honor. LT Michael P. Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush on October 22, 2007. As the first Navy SEAL to receive the Medal of Honor posthumously and the first Navy officer since Vietnam War to receive America’s highest award for gallantry, LT Michael P. Murphy took his place in the hallowed Hall of Heroes in the Pentagon. LT Murphy’s character, compassion, leadership and heroism must be preserved for future generations. This book provides that recognition. About the Author Gary Williams is a graduate of the University of Dayton with a Master’s in Public Administration.
