She specializes in larval ecology, the effects of ultraviolet radiation and the design of protected landscapes. Since graduating as a geologist, she has done research in marine environments from Antarctica to Alaska as well as points in between. She received her PhD in Zoology from the University of Washington, where she focused on early life stages of various marine organisms.
