Overview

This book is an introduction for professionals in Western medicine and for acupuncturists on the use of acupuncture in treatment of schizophrenia and sleep disorders.Acupuncture has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in mental health and sleep disorders. This book aims to build a bridge between conventional medical research and practice, which is increasingly interested in the benefits of acupuncture but often not aware of the considerable knowledge and experience available, and TCM/acupuncture theory and practice, where understanding of conventional Western concepts of and approaches to schizophrenia may be lacking. Acupuncture has, for instance, been shown to normalize levels of neurotransmitters involved in sleep and schizophrenia.Contributions by leading experts from both the Western and Chinese traditions deal with: current concepts of schizophrenia, pharmacotherapy, practical experience, cross-cultural differences, comparisons of TCM/Western diagnoses, sleep disturbances, effects of acupuncture on neurotransmitters (dopamine and others), philosophy of TCM, neuroimaging studies with acupuncture, recent research results from East and West on TCM and acupuncture treatments for schizophrenia. In the editors' words: 'We aim to build a bridge between Western and Eastern medicine. The main goal of this book is to create more understanding and to stimulate cooperation across the borders of the medicine we were taught, in order to create better treatments for our patients. What we can not achieve alone, we might be able to achieve together.'

Reviews

The editors are to be commended. This book is a scholarly work which calls for the scientific evaluation of acupuncture and the role that it may have in improving the quality of life of patients with schizophrenia. Hagen Rampes, FRCPsych (Associate Medical Director & Consultant Psychiatrist at Springwell Centre, Barnet Hospital, London, UK) and Flavio Dantas, MD, LLB, MBA, DSc (Professor of Homeopathy at Faculty of Medicine, Federal University of Uberlandia, Brazil and Vice President of the Brazilian Medical Acupuncture Association) Schizophrenia, Sleep, and Acupuncture emerges from three well-established disciplines: psychiatry, clinical psychopharmacology, and sleep medicine. Written by an international cadre of researchers and clinicians, this timely volume gives an up-to-date summary of the diagnosis and treatment of of schizophrenia in Western countries. It stresses, in addition, the importance of crosscultural issues in order to reach an appropriate diagnosis, and to integrate complementary therapies such as acupuncture.Insomnia is a common feature of schizophrenia. In this respect, severe insomnia is often seen during exacertation of schizophrenia, and may actually precede the appearance of other symptoms of relapse. Chapters in this volume discuss sleep and the effects of antipsychotic drugs on sleep in schizophrenia patients. A theoretical background of the effect of acupuncture on sleep in normal subjects and in schizophrenia patients with sleep disorders is also discussed in detail. The role of dopamine and glutamate in sleep disruption of schizophrenia patients and the connection between dopamine and acupuncture are also highlighted. Peggy Bosch and Maurits van den Noort have edited a book that is clear, comprehensive, well balanced and remarkably complete. This volume will be of interest to a wide circle of readers including psychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists and sleep medicine specialists, who evaluate and/or treat patients with schizophrenia and comorbid insomnia. Jaime M. Monti, MD (Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at School of Medicine, Clinics Hospital, University of the Republic, Montevideo, Uruguay) This is a most informative and stimulating approach to a challenging problem. It contains essential key elements to understand the physiopathology of schizophrenia; the Editors must be praised for unifying East-West culture into this long awaited synthesis of knowledge from respected scholars. This team work should not only be useful to experts and practitioners but also to persons with schizophrenia and their relatives. Roger Godbout, PhD (Professor of Psychiatry at University of Montreal, Canada) The authors have found a way to gently ease you into a world of mystery and wonder. Their insight brings you to a place of discovery and gives you a place in this journey that we all take together. Please enjoy this wonderful book and explore the possibilities that are presented to you. Meera Popkin-Tarack (Broadway star and schizophrenia survivor)
