Reviews

This outstanding work should stimulate a break through in case formulation leading to comprehensive biopsychosocial approaches known to improve outcomes of people with schizophrenia. A clinical manual of this scope is long overdue. Richard H. Hunter, PhD, ABPP, Past Chair, APA/CAPP Task Force on Serious Mental Illness, Clinical Outcomes Group, Inc., and Department of Psychiatry, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine This type of book is very overdue in the field. Silverstein, Spaulding, and Menditto have produced THE definitive book on schizophrenia, which will prove to be a wonderful resource for clinicians, consumers, researchers, and students. The comprehensiveness of this text is unparalleled in the field. David Penn, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill An authoritative, concise, and practical synthesis of the nature and treatment of schizophrenia. This outstanding, compact guide deserves a place on the bookshelf of every clinician who treats individuals with schizophrenia. Kim Mueser, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry and of Community and Family Medicine, at Dartmouth Medical School and the Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center Schizophrenia as a group of mental illness remains among the least understood and most disabling of conditions facing medicine. Despite advances in pharmacotherapy profound deficits in psychological and social function often persist for decades. Silverstein, Spaulding, and Menditto present the reader with a long needed practical and clearly referenced guide for clinicians concerning psychological treatments which can be genuinely helpful for persons with this condition. Detailed descriptions and honest appraisals of the efficacy are offered for interventions ranging for instance from psychotherapy to supported housing to the many varieties of skills training and beyond. This is likely to be an indispensable handbook for students, supervisors and new and seasoned professionals alike. Paul Lysaker, Assistant Professor Dept of Psychiatry Indiana University School of Medicine and Staff Psychologist Roudebush VA Medical Center

From Psychiatic Services, July 2007, Vol. 58, no. 7, reviewed by Dr. Stovall, University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester: ...Overall, Schizophrenia strongly serves the purpose of broadening our understanding of effective treatment for schizophrenia and could easily serve as introductory reading in many training programs. The authors' argument that the most effective treatment is an integrated one that combines symptom-focused treatments with strength- and vulnerabilitybased rehabilitation efforts is a timely reminder to all of us involved in treating individuals with schizophrenia. Paul Lysaker, Assistant Professor Dept of Psychiatry Indiana Univeristy School of Medicine and Staff Psychologist Roudebush VA Medical Center Michael J. Schrift, DO(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine) **Description** The fundamental premise of this book, with which I agree, is that schizophrenia is a complex condition, typically involving abnormal brain function, with exacerbations under stress, and manifesting multiple cognitive impairments in multiple domains, including deficits in social cognition which also further exacerbates the patients' problems. Just like individuals with overt brain diseases such as stroke benefit from speech, language, physical, and cognitive therapies, so would patients with schizophrenia. This new book reviews the psychological interventions that have some evidence of effectiveness in restoring cognitive and social functioning. Written and edited by nationally recognized clinician-researchers of psychosocial treatments in schizophrenia, this book is a welcome contribution to the field. **Purpose** The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of current conceptualizations of, and treatments for, schizophrenia. The focus of the book is on psychological treatments for the disorder as these interventions are relatively ignored in graduate and medical training about schizophrenia, even though the evidence for their effectiveness is comparable to that of pharmacologic treatment, with the combination of the two typically producing the best treatment outcomes. **Audience** The intended audience includes psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychology graduate students. **Features** The first of the book's eight sections reviews such topics as the concept of schizophrenia, definitions, the medical model, course and prognosis, outcome, and diagnostic procedures and documentation. The second section covers the theories and models of schizophrenia including the neurobiology, environmental, and cognitiv
