He had, it is true, a strong passion for ordered liberty, and with this he combined an equally strong sentiment of humanity. It was impossible for him to refrain from expressing these elements of his character in his works, and it is because he expressed them that his highest conceptions convey so powerful an impression of sincerity and truth. Moreover, his writ ings were one of the mightiest influences in arousing in the German mind a longing for a worthier national life and they still feed the flame which they helped to kindle. It is, however, to do Schiller extreme injustice to sup pose that he was nothing more than a proclaimer of new social and political doctrines. Even in his earliest dramas, which were the passionate utterance of long-sup pressed emotions, he did not altogether disregard the claims of art and in his mature labours these claims be came absolutely supreme. It was one of his fundamental principles that the artist is not directly concerned with the practical effect of his work; that he has to think only of its artistic quality. That a work of art, if its artistic quality be true, will indirectly stimulate man's moral nature by making him vividly conscious of his power and freedom, Schiller firmly maintained but he also maintained that to make this the end of art is to conflict with its essential tendencies and to defeat its proper aim.
