Overview

This bibliography brings together the salient works on the process of economic development and economic revitalization in nonmetropolitan areas. The literature cited reviews (1) the forces affecting different economic sectors, such as manufacturing, tourism, and services, and the potential of these sectors to contribute to rural economic development, (2) the forces affecting various types of firms, such as new firms, small firms, and high-tech businesses, and the potential of these types of firms to contribute to rural economic development, (3) contextual factors, such as markets, business climate, and technological change, and (4) economic and development policies and strategies that various levels of government could employ. F. LARRY LEISTRITZ is Professor of Agricultural Economics at North Dakota State University. The author of nine books, he is currently working on a book on the farm crisis in the Heartland. RITA R. HAMM is a Socioeconomic Research Specialist in the Institute for Business and Industry Development at North Dakota State University. She is the coauthor of numerous publications.
