Author Information

Julie Carter grew up in Sunderland and lives near Keswick in Cumbria, UK. She started her working life as a researcher in genetics before teaching science and outdoor education then becoming a medical doctor. After a couple of decades working in emergency care and general practice, she began to look more broadly for different ways of promoting health and alleviating distress. This led her to train in Human Givens which is an evidence-based practical approach to health based on getting our needs met in balance, without exploiting others.Julie is a runner, a climber and an adventurer. Her experiences in all aspects of her life are the inspiration for her writing which crosses the genres of creative non- fiction and poetry. Her second book, 'Is It Serious?', is a collection of short works on the subjects of family, love, science, medicine and wild things. Julie enjoys forming collaborations, making connections and speaking at events and festivals. She has worked with the filmmaker Jessie Leong and their film 'I Am A Fellrunner' has won laurels at nine film festivals worldwide. The film is available free on YouTube and also on the Mindfell website where you can find a further selection of Julie's Running the Red Line 243 work including film and audio as well as the all the back issues of her popular Mindfell Monthly Blog.Julie's third book, 'The Script - a tale of DNA, destiny and determination' will be published in the autumn of 2023. The Script is the story of Julie's three day run across the north of England, from Keswick to Gateshead, to honour a significant ancestor. It is an exploration of inheritance weaving in evolutionary biology, history and psychology into a real-life adventure.Following the publication of her experimental essay 'The Scafells - A Place of Highest Honour' in Saraband's 'North Country' Anthology in 2022 Julie is now is working on a book of lyric essays on themes around how we find safety in a threatening world.
