Overview"April 1941: After fleeing wartime France alone, seventeen-year-old Claire arrives in Lisbon to stay with her less-than-welcoming uncle. While she waits desperately for her family and the ship they're supposed to take to America, she begins a search for two young refugee children she'd promised to take care of, who have gone missing. Antonio, an aspiring artist and occasional pickpocket, waits tables in the Chave d'Ouro, a Lisbon caf that's a hotspot for the plotters and spies flocking to Portugal's capital. But when a German refugee he's befriended is dragged out of the caf and murdered, Antonio sets out to discover who is responsible. Despite an inauspicious first encounter between Claire and Antonio, their investigations - and their lives - intertwine as they discover that the disappearances are linked to a secret in Lisbon that the Nazis are willing to kill for. Set in a city filled with intrigue and betrayal, Rossio Square N.59 is a story of lost dreams, infinite hope, and two people caught up in change they never sought or wanted. I read it from beginning to end, hardly putting it down. (...) Through a fictional account, this book transports us back to a Lisbon in turmoil, full of spies on both sides, the capital city of a provincial country that suddenly finds itself invaded by tens of thousands of people fleeing the Nazis who look to the United States, the destination of most refugees, as a new promised land. This is a Lisbon with few available rooms, but still space for a love story between two young people. -Cesar Santos Silva, author of Antonio, the Other Salazar World War Two Lisbon was a hub of intrigue. Spies, refugees, Nazis, disappearances, and a murder affect the lives of two young people, Claire and Antonio, trying to survive in the city. This carefully researched, well-written, engaging historical novel tells a wonderful story set in this difficult time and place. -Phyllis Hall Haislip, author of Lottie's Courage: A Contraband Slave's Story Jeannine Johnson Maia's novel is so deftly written. Her sense of detail and setting bring wartime Lisbon alive. I could sense the confusion and fear, but also feel the sunshine and smell the air. I'd never read a war story that takes place in Portugal, so this was not only entertaining, it was also informative. There's something in this novel for everyone--history, romance, intrigue! Highly recommended! -Online review from bookbabylove """Through her compelling characters and deft storytelling, Jeannine Johnson Maia takes the reader into the suspenseful and dangerous world of Lisbon 1941, when the city served as an escape route for Jews and others fleeing the Nazis and the Second World War."" -Richard Zimler, The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon and The Gospel According to Lazarus ""Jeannine Johnson Maia's novel is a breath of fresh air on a theme that is never exhausted.
