OverviewDifficult places reduce things to the essential. Risky situations give me access to people and life in a way that staying safe does not permit, New York-based artist Rosalind Solomon has noted in reference to her stunning black-and-white portraits of guns. Big Guns and Little spans 26 years, from 1974 to 2001, during which Solomon traveled around the world developing this highly personal body of work that addresses struggle and survival. Early on, she focused on her southern neighbors and their guns: Men casually carrying rifles around the Scottsboro, Alabama, court house, or children in Chattanooga, Tennessee, playing with toy guns. She became interested in how the men were using their guns to exert control and the children were using theirs to act out fantasies of power. Shortly after 9/11, Solomon took the latest photograph in this compelling series.
