He was a widely acclaimed naturalist, author, photographer, and speaker. He made his home at the base of Longs Peak, near Estes Park, Colorado. His homestead cabin which he built as a boy is still standing, now a private museum owned and operated by two of his descendants, Elizabeth Mills and Eryn Mills. A friend of John Muir, he published many short stories on his experiences in the raw wilderness of North America, many of which were compiled into over 17 books.
