Role of women in economic development

Overview

Women contribute to development through their remunerated as well as unremunerated work. This classification of work as 'remunerative' and 'unremunerative', specific to woman, emerges from her involvement in the economy in the capacity as a producer- involved in paid work or economic activity, and as a reproducer- involved in the caring of the physical and psychological needs of her family plus the general management of the household. The key issue concerning women's participation in the development process is the way in which their employment has to accommodate their paramount role in the unpaid domestic and care economy.
