OverviewThis World War II Memoir by then seventeen-year old Robert C. Visser recounts his experiences after he was caught in the November 1944 Nazi round-up of able-bodied men in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Transported to Germany to work for the German war effort he escaped, was caught and after a brief stint in prison was forced to dig trenches near the front. Following a second escape he was liberated from his hiding place by American forces in early March 1945. He recovered from malnutrition and injuries in hospitals in Verviers, Belgium before being able to return to his home in Rotterdam. In 1952 he graduated with an MS degree in Civil Engineering from Delft Technological University, married his wife Elly, and migrated to the United States. Bob's entire professional career has involved offshore oil and gas development He has authored several papers dealing with offshore technology and holds a number of patents. He is a lecturer on deepwater development methods at USC. The Vissers have two married sons, both also civil engineers, and five grandchildren. Bob's current hobbies include his work and sailing. On a different career path he has recently authored a book, Rifle-Butts, Bombs, Soup and Lice, relating his experiences as a prisoner of the Germans during the latter part of World War II.
