In a well-crafted argument and a well-exemplified series of chapters, Fahnestock undermines our comfortable sense that, aside from metaphor, the figures can be safely ignored by rhetorical theorists and critics, that the study of such schemes as antithesis, incrementum, gradatio, antimetabole, ploche and polyptoton is the preserve only of pedants. --Quarterly Journal of Speech Jeanne Fahnestock's book displays a range of erudition not only in the history of science but in the history of rhetoric as well...It is impossible to provide an adequate review of the wealth of evidence offered in the book.
