Since the early 1990s, Northeast Asia's steel industry has undergone a remarkable restructuring process. Notably, the region's steel industry lost over 1 million jobs in the 1990s. The policy environment has changed with governments relying more on market mechanisms. Mergers and strategic alliances among the region's largest steel makers have proliferated and the impact of renewed US protectionism has had minimal effect.

Author Information

Hiro Lee is Professor of Economics at the Research Institute for Economics and Business Administration at Kobe University, Japan. He has worked extensively in quantitive analysis of international trade and development, particularly on East Asian journals. Professor Lee's studies have been published in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Development Economies, the Journal of the Japanese and International Economies, and the World Economy. Eric D. Ramstetter is Head of the Industrial Management Section at the International Centre for the Study of East Asian Development, Japan. He is also Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Economics at Kyushu University, Japan and has worked as a consultant for numerous international agencies and governments. Dr. Ramstetter's research has focused on analysis of multinational corporations in Asian economies and has been published in numerous journals and books. Oleksandr Movshuk is Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Toyama University, Japan. His research has focused on investigation of the reform of state-owned enterprises in China and applied analysis of international trade flows in East Asia. Results of his research have been published in various academic journals, including Japan and the World Economy, Journal of Asian Economics, and Asian Economic Journal.
