Overview

This volume is a wake-up call to Indians to shape their country as an ethical nation. The articles in the compilation have been written by some of the most eminent thinkers and leaders of India in various fields who are known for their commitment to living and working with integrity. It addresses the reasons for the absence of honest, ethical and transparent dealings in all sections of the society, including legislative, executive and judicial branches of the government. The articles present a credible and practical set of ideas and approaches to raise standards of integrity, ethical behaviour and governance in the institutions of our country. Some of these were presented at a two-day conclave organized by the Foundation of Restoration of National Values in New Delhi in November 2008. The compendium not only captures the essence of the conclave but goes beyond it by providing a roadmap for initiatives that can be taken at individual and collective levels to transform India into an upright nation-free from corruption, deception and opaqueness in decision making.

This book is just like a ray of hope for civil society because it provides enormous guidelines to eliminate irregularities. This book is a must read for policy makers, journalists as well as anybody who is worrying about degrading values of nation's institutions -- either public or private. -- The Sahara Times This book contains Indian sociological analysis, offering rational solutions on how each one of us can make a visible impact in improving the society we live in and India, on the whole. Being the president of the Foundation for Restoration of National Values, E Sreedharan has struck a harmonious chord while writing to improve upon nationalized principles. -- Management Compass This could very well be one of the most important books to come out of India in the past two or three decades in the sphere of society and politics... Encompassing the thoughts and insights of some of the most eminent scholars, intellectuals and public personalities of India on the subject of national rejuvenation, 'Restoring Values' is essential reading for particularly those at the helm of politics and public affairs... the importance of this collection of commentaries consists mainly in the vital contribution it makes towards understanding the issues of our times and in the prescriptions it offers for resolving them. The book is of supreme importance to all those who are keenly interested in taking South Asia and the developing world to a better future... [The book] have a huge bearing on the present and on the future of particularly the developing world. Besides being a mirror to our times, it has within it a blueprint for the rejuvenation of our societies. -- The Island The book] makes an important contribution by looking at the many complexities of integrity, ethical behaviour and good governance in the Indian context...contributors to this volume have done commendable work...A volume such as this was long overdue and will enhance the level of debate in ethical conduct in governance, public administration and the judiciary significantly by making the readers aware of the role of society and the individual. The collection of articles also presents a good trigger for debates in ethics and forms a sound basis for evolving a concept of ethical values for readers interested in administration. I would also recommend the book to public libraries and government agencies. -- Current Science
