Reflective Parenting: Raising Emotionally Healthy Children

Overview

Following on from her acclaimed first book, Reflective Parenting, Sheila Redfern brings a fresh look at parenting young children in today’s world. In this revised edition Dr Redfern uses her extensive experience of working with children and their families to help parents adopt an approach to their children that ensures their long-term security, resilience and well-being in the face of life’s challenges. Using everyday examples, this book provides you with practical strategies to develop a reflective style of parenting that supports your child’s development, enhances their relationships – with you and with their friends and siblings – and reach their full potential. Reflective Parenting shows us that there are no quick fixes to difficult behaviours or emotions and that the best route to managing children’s behaviour is to help guide them in how they manage their emotions. Crucially, it shows us that parents are the key to their children’s long-term emotional and behavioural well-being and that adopting a reflective parenting stance can vastly improve your relationship with your child. Reflective Parenting is an informative and enriching read for parents, written to help parents form a better relationship with their children and to help support their healthy emotional development in today's challenging world. It is also an essential resource for clinicians working with children, young people and families to support them in managing the dynamics of the child-parent relationship.

Reviews

“Sheila Redfern’s Reflective Parenting is a masterful blend of clinical rigour and compassionate wisdom. Drawing on decades of practice, Redfern translates the best of developmental research into clear, practical guidance that invites adults to look inward as they nurture the children in their care. Every insight is grounded in evidence, yet delivered with a warmth that makes complex ideas accessible and immediately useful. Ten years on, this new updated book feels even more relevant: it empowers parents, carers, teachers and therapists alike to understand the emotional worlds of children—and their own—so they can respond with attuned, confident compassion. This anniversary edition is not just a reprint; it is a vital companion for anyone committed to fostering secure, healthy relationships across the generations.” Julia Samuel, MBE, psychotherapist, author, podcaster “Reflective parenting is turning out to be a key to mental health. This book really helps us understand what it involves in practice.” Sue Gerhardt, author of Why Love Matters and The Selfish Society ""If you want your kids to mentally flourish and be able to have a great life in a world that's gone insane then this book will tell you everything you need to know. It's the ultimate guide on how to be the parents you wished you had."" Ruby Wax
