Reviews

"I found this story to be both riveting and inspiring. Minzhi takes you through the often traumatic early years of her youth, embodying the unyielding spirit of competitive gymnastics, and the power of her perseverance and resilience in times of poverty and forced separation from her parents in the time of Mao's China. It's an engrossing narrative and a must have for readers who enjoy compelling stories of strength, and those seeking a profound source of self-belief (Kaye) How does one survive the ravages of history on a life? Over and over again, we read of individual courage and determination to not just survive but to live out a dream. Mao's cultural revolution sought to radically change the very structure of Chinese society in a brutal and uncompromising manner. Minzhi's family, caught up in this ""re-education"" was torn asunder and each member of this family no doubt has a story to tell. But this is Minzhi's story, the story of a young girl sucked into a system that demanded compliance in thought and deed. The miracle is that our author had a dream. Despite all the propaganda she felt life could offer her more. It is a story of resistance, loneliness, loss and overcoming told simply and elegantly (Linda)."

Author Information

Minzhi was born in the 1960s and grew up in a time of turmoil in China. She was trained as a radio engineer and worked in this field until her late 20s. In 1986, Minzhi was one of the engineers chosen to work at VDE Testing and Certification Institute in Germany, which opened her eyes to the western world. Since then she made up her mind to, one day, see the world with her own eyes. In 1989 Minzhi saw an opportunity to be able travel to Australia as a student. She gave up her job as an engineer and her flat, and came to study English in Australia. Since then she managed to obtain her permanent residence and lives in Australia ever since. In Australia she has worked as a multicultural assistant, IT support and now international students coordinator at Victoria schools. She has published a few articles in Chinese newspaper over the years and regularly blogs about her encounters in Australia, thoughts, and travel experiences on her Chinese social platforms. She is now living with her partner, two daughters and a Maltese Poodle cross dog called Pip.
