OverviewGeneral Robert Edward Lee (January 19, 1807 - October 12, 1870) was a career U.S. Army officer and the most celebrated general of the Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Robert Edward Lee, Jr. (1843-1914) was the youngest son of General Lee. He became a soldier, farmer, businessman, and author. Lee Jr. recorded his memories of his family and life in Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee (1904).
